In connection with our 'How we use the Sea' topic and our Marine Conservation Challenge, we have been looking at ways that we can help protect our oceans. Here is one explanation two of our girls wrote about how we might be able to do this!

Marine Conservation Challenge
After Libby's presentation last week, Room 17 decided to do a special homework challenge to help protect our oceans. Our challenge was to go to a local beach or bush and to do a 5 minute clean up. Here are some of our pictures from the week.

Marine Conservation
Today we had a quest speaker, Libby, to talk about Marine Conservation. She has spent time all over the world helping different sea creatures. It was through her work that she began to see the effects of human's on the ocean environment. We saw photos and talked about the effects of plastic in our oceans - and looked at ways we can protect our ocean. Here are some of our reflections - and decisions for change. As for me, I am going to get myself a water bottle - so I don't use disposable plastic ones. We can all do our part to help protect our oceans!
Check out her website here:
How to save the ocean
Today we went the hall to learn about how to protect our oceans.
My favorite part was when she showed us the pictures about the manta ray .
The lady shared these facts:
- Say no to single plastic
- Sea animals can't eat plastic
- Rubbish is bad for the sea
Because of today I am going to do more beach clean ups.
- Smrithi
Look after Our Sea
Today,we went to the hall to learn about how to protect our oceans.
My favourite part was learning about that lady who was talking to us she said that she works with other sea creatures.
The lady shared these facts
- That turtles have teeth that face down
- That mountain rays have big mouths for eating sting rays
- The whale sharks can grow around 20 milameters.
Because of today i am going to pick up rubbish if I see some and I will re-use rubbish.

This is Libby's hand-made bike using natural materials! She is going to use this to cycle from the top of NZ down to the bottom talking to different schools about how to protect our ocean. |
How
to save our ocean
Today we went to the hall to learn
about how to protect our ocean.
My favourite part was seeing the turtle
on the slide show. The lady shared these facts
-
If we used less plastic less animals
would be endangered.
-
To clean the beaches for less damage to
animals living situations.
-
At the beach don’t litter plastic or
anything.
Because of today I will be against
plastic.
I will not use plastic bags and use fabric
bags instead.
Littering at the beach should be
against the law!

How We Use The Sea
This term we have been looking at How we use the Sea and have had a lot of fun learning new things. For our quick writes we have been looking at different ideas to link in with this topic - and here are some of them for you to enjoy.
What if we lived
under the sea?
If we lived in the sea, we would all be fish and I would
want to be a starfish. I would live with the other starfish in the sea. I
really want a jellyfish for a pet.
-
Viola
If we lived under the sea, I would be friends with the fish
like a mermiad. I would go to a under water school. In there the games we could
play would only be swimming. When I go home, sadly I would eat fish for dinner.

If I lived under the sea, the front door would be made out
of coral. In my house I would have cooked seaweed and what I would drink is
jellyfish water. My bed would be able to play the sound of the sea. My bed
would be made of rocks. Don’t worry – I would have a matress on top of the
rocks. My tower would be made out of seaweed because seaweed is really strong.
-
Molly
If we lived under the sea we would have to have a massive
air tank shop so we could survive. It would be awesome if I saw a baby Angler
fish. It would guide me back to my amazing underwater house. I would have a pet
stingray in a 10 metre by 10 metre tank. It would stay with me. The stingray’s
name would be Bobby or Stingray.
-
Amy
If we lived under the sea it would be really freaky because
you would see scary great white sharks. I would want to be in the midnight and
twilight zones because it would be fun to have more space in the water and to
have fun with the whales. But scary too.

Oliver
What if there was no
sea?
If there was no sea I would be happy beause no one would
drown and we wouldn’t have any tsunamis. But is we have no water, we can’t get
water from the sea. We might have a massive city!
-
Evan
If there was no sea there would be no home for the fish and
the other sea creatures. We couldn’t eat fish and shrimp and other things that
live in the sea. The human’s could not go swimming, surfing and diving. Human’s
could not get their daily water.

What if we made the
sea like a zoo and put creatures in certain places?
It would be cool and I would work there. There would be a
gaint pool that fits all the sea creatures in the world. They would go in
special cages and I would control a machine that has all food that the sea
creatures like to eat. I would control the line that makes it move.
